A man with many lives, Abraham Verghese was raised in Ethiopia and received medical training there before emigrating to join his parents in the Northeastern region of the United States after the country fell into civil unrest. He worked all over the states as a doctor, from Texas to Tennessee to Boston. His work is born out of the stories of his lived experience in these places with the people he treats and befriends. The Covenant of Water is an homage to his grandmother’s upbringing in Kerala, India, in a place of a different time and circumstance. His writing voice is shaped by a deep listening, you won’t be disappointed if you can read this novel or one of his others.
